A 7 page review of the book by Randy Albeda and Chris Tilly. is an expose’ on the numerous societal factors which are facing women today. It is a look into poverty as many of us have never seen poverty, a look at the blatant and sometimes shocking facts of being a poor woman in the United States, the facts of that ever present “bottomless pit”. It is also a look, however, a the so-called “glass ceiling” which confronts professional women in the workplace. This paper contends that while the two scenarios are definitely different, they are inherently related to the same societal factors of the patriarchal dominated society which has been in place for the history of mankind. Waite and Maggie Gallagher relates 18 years of social science research by Waite who is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago and Gallagher who is the Director of the Marriage Program at the Institute for American Values. Despite Gallagher’s professional position, the authors are quick to note that their text is not based on arguments of morals and religion but instead are based on years of social science data including factors such as health, finances, life expectancy and emotional well-being. "Blaming the Victim" by William Ryan

A review of the book by William Ryan in which he focuses on the fact that society tends to place the blame of societal ills on those people who are actually victims of society as well. For instance, rather than placing blame on those who live in abject poverty and unable to get off the welfare roles, perhaps we should look to their surroundings first and see where the blame really lies. Ryan makes a good point in discussing the ‘slum lords’ at one point. Instead of blaming the people who live in filthy conditions in the slums, perhaps we should first take a look at the slum itself.
